Cromwell's Rule: Oliver Cromwell was the Protestant Lord Protecter of England. In 1649 he came to Dublin, Ireland and killed 2000 Irish citizens. Along with that a large portion of the irish land was confiscated and divided among the English. The irish population was decreased by two-thirds during this time. Cromwell sent most of the Irish to the islands in the Caribbean to work as slaves.
Ireland's War of Independence: In 1919 the irish citizens had finally had enough of English rule, so they decided it was time to kick the English out of Ireland. The Irish Republican Army began to attack Royal Irish Constabulary, which was the police force in Ireland. They did this because they thought the police force was supporting English rule. The fighting between the Irish Republic Army and the Royal Irish Constabulary went on for about 3 years and then in 1921, they established a truce known as the Anglo Irish Treaty.
The Constitution of Eire- In 1937 Ireland's constitution was established. The constitution established the different branches of government and how they should be ran, along with the courts and the duties within that system. The document also states the rights of each irish citizen. This constitution is still used today.
